Shoofly Natural No-See-Ums Repellent

Blackberry Creek Shoo Fly Soap and Spray was originally developed as an all-natural, healthy way to effectively repel black lies, deer flies and mosquitoes. But since it's introduction I have had customers report that it also works great for all insect pests including no-see-ums.

For those of you not familiar with no-see-ums they are small biting midges... less than an eighth of an inch long. No-see-ums get there name because many are so small people can't even see what's biting them. No-see-ums are primarily found around the beach. They're notorious for ruining your day at the beach in Florida... where there are more than 40 varieties... and anywhere in the Caribbean.

They usually bite you on the ankles and lower legs but can bite you anywhere. A no-see-ums bite turns into a red welt that itches like crazy for several days and the welts can last for weeks.

Most complications from no-see-ums bites come from allergic reactions that in rare instances can be severe and even life-threatening. There are reported cases where bites from no-see-ums have spread other diseases.

Recommended commercial repellents contain 30% or more of DEET. A lot of people... including myself... have second thoughts about using products with DEET. The problem is made worse when you're at the beach because many sun screens will increase the absorption of DEET when used with these insect repellents.

About Yellow Flies

For those of you planning to vacation or move to Florida or the Gulf Coast you should know that...

  • Yellow flies are out from March to November.
  • They're at their worst between April and June when many people are reluctant to venture out of their houses to do anything outdoors.
  • They'll bite any exposed part of your body.
  • You won't hear them coming because their flight is very quiet.
  • They'll attack and bite your dog.

How to Apply Shoofly Soap to Repel Yellow Flies

Watch the video on the left to find out how to apply Shoofly Soap and to see how it's not noticeable, greasy or sticky when it dries. To repel yellow flies and other insect pests, you simply apply a lather of soap on your skin and don't rinse it off... like a lotion. It dries clear and is invisible. And you'll smell great instead of smelling like insect repellent.

Use Shoofly Spray on your hat, hair line and socks together with the soap for the best protection.

You can safely use the spray directly on your skin as well. Using the spray only is more convenient because the soap requires that you have a source of water to wet it. But the soap is more effective than the spray because the lather has a higher concentration of ingredients.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shoofly Soap & Spray

Does it work for everybody?

No. Every now and then there will be a person whoes body chemistry decreases the effectiveness of Shoofly Soap and Spray. No-see-ums are the most challenging insect we deal with. I would say works 95% of the time.

How much do I need?

One bar of Shoofly Soap is enough for one person to use and repel black flies for the entire season. The amount of spray you need totally depends on how you're using it and I can't predict how much you'll need.

Can Shoofly products be used with sun screen?

No. The fragrance of the sun screen can render it ineffective.

Must Shoofly Soap or Spray be reapplied after you've been in the water?

Yes. Shoofly products are not waterproof.

How long does it last before you have to reapply it?

It depends upon several factors. How much do you sweat? Your personal body chemistry can affect how long it lasts. Were you in the water? If the no-see-ums start to bother you just reapply it.

Do I need to use both the soap and the spray?

No. But it's best if you do. Shoofly Soap puts a higher concentration of ingredients on your skin than the spray. Use the spray on your hat, the ends of your sleeves, and around your socks. Having said that, a lot of people use the spray only and are completely happy. But from my own experience, if I had to have one or the other, I would want the soap.

Are some people bothered by no-see-ums more than others?

Absolutely. You can have four people standing on a golf course and have one constantly being bitten by no-see-ums while the others are not. It's a matter of body chemistry. Fortunately Shoofly Soap and Spray work extremely well for the vast majority of people with that "oh so special" body chemistry.

What else can I do to help keep no-see-ums from bothering me?

Avoid dark colored clothing like dark blue or black.

Does Shoofly Soap and Spray smell bad?

No. I've only had two or three complaints about the fragrance. Most people actually like it. But no... you're not going to smell like insecticide. All the ingredients in Shoofly Soap and Spray can be found in most kitchens.

Can Shoofly be used on dogs?

Yes! We have had excellent results using Shoofly Spray to repel black flies and deer flies on dogs. I have not had any specific reports regarding repelling no-see-ums from pets. But it worls well on people... it works well for biting black lies and deer flies... so it's reasonable to assume that it would work well for no-see-ums.
