Shoofly Natural Black Fly Repellent

Overview

Shoofly Black Fly Repellent Soap and Spray consistently outperforms chemical packed commercial repellents. Our customers tell us it's the best black fly repellent they've ever used... all-natural or commercial. The Blackberry Creek family lives in Wisconsin... prime black fly territory with a few billion deer flies to boot... and they love the outdoors. The annual infestation of biting black flies can make outdoor activities miserable. So they developed Shoofly Soap and Spray using all-natural ingredients to repel them.

I've used it myself in Vermont... another black fly haven in spring... and it works great!

Why Shoofly Soap is Healthier and Safer Than Other Natural Black Fly Repellents

Black Fly on Leaf

Say cheese...
  then Shoo!
Shoofly Soap is good for your skin because it's over 50% olive oil. Both the soap and spray are all-natural and completely safe to use on children and pets because...
  • It doesn't contain DEET.
  • Shoofly Soap doesn't contain Citronella oil like most competing natural black fly repellents. That's important because Citronella may irritate sensitive skin... can cause dermatitis... and is not recommended for children under three years old. The concerns about Citronella seem to be a bigger deal in Canada and Europe than in the United States. But why worry about Citronella when there's an all-natural, incredibly effective black fly repellent that doesn't use it and is safe for everyone of all ages with or without sensitive skin?

How to Apply Shoofly Soap to Repel Black Flies

Watch the video on the left to find out how to apply Shoofly Soap and to see how it's not noticeable, greasy or sticky when it dries. To repel black flies and other insect pests, you simply apply a lather of soap on your skin and don't rinse it off... like a lotion. It dries clear and is invisible. And you'll smell great instead of smelling like insect repellent.

Use Shoofly Spray on your hat and socks together with the soap for the best protection.

You can safely use the spray directly on your skin as well. Using the spray only is more convenient because the soap requires that you have a source of water to wet it. But the soap is more effective than the spray because the lather has a higher concentration of ingredients.

"Before my annual Canadian fly in fishing trip (10 years running), I was warned about the black flies and mosquito overpopulation due to the wet spring. In searching on the Internet I discovered the Blackberry Creek Shoo Fly Soap and ordered three bars. Every night I showered with the Shoo Fly soap and had no problems with mosquitoes or flies on me during the night. In my dry bag I carried one of the bars with me when we (10 of us) had our shore lunch. The black flies, deer flies, and mosquitoes were horrible even though we were on a point, trying to enjoy our meal after our morning catch. The rest of the group had various mosquito sprays along with ThermaCELL, but all were having no effect. I reached into my dry bag and laughingly told the group to use some of the soap, leaving some of the residue on them. The results were amazing. We got immediate relief!! The bugs would hover around our hats, but would not bite. I have ordered an additional 10 bars to give as gifts, as we have a mosquito problem here in Louisiana. I have yet to try the Shoo Fly Spray, but I heartily recommend the soap. Thanks again for your wonderful product!!" , Shreveport, LA

"The soap works better than the spray. I used the soap twice to mow my lawn for about 1 1/2 hours at a time. I am in the woods every 2 to 3 days doing wildlife research. I have not tried the soap in the woods but tried the spray. The spray was not as effective and I had to keep applying it every hour or less. The black flies still dive in and go up the nose and into the eyes. A Vanilla spray from Walgreen's seems to be more effective. Believe this, if you could come up with a repellent that keeps the black flies out away from the face it would be worth a million. The black flies are far more aggressive than mosquitoes and are terrible to deal with. Used both Shoofly Soap and Spray for Black Flies. I like the shampoo soap and I will try the Shoofly soap in the woods to see if it lasts longer than the spray." , Morrison, IL

"First, your Shoofly products. I purchased the soap and the spray. I live on 65 acres of woodlands which include wetlands. We have had generous rain this past month. Ideal breeding conditions for all our buggy friends. And they have been fruitful and multiplied! Ideal conditions to test your products. I had been using a similar product, using a different combination of oils. This gave me a chance to compare the two. Both theirs and yours do very well overall. Differences in terrain, weather and body chemistry may make someone else's results vary, but here's what I found. The Shoofly products excel in these areas - aroma, going on lightly and with no greasy feel afterward, and in keeping away black flies and deer flies. With mosquitoes, the difference is minimal. In the course of a week or two, I may get one or two more bites with the Shoo Fly than the other product, but that's a very slim margin. With the abundance of bugs out there, both products score well into the 90's. I find the Shoo Fly spray has a slightly better aroma than the soap, but both kinds are equally effective. I also purchased the Tropical Coconut soap, but I haven't used it much yet. " , Windsor, ME

"My kids did not want me to put it on them in the morning before school. Then my 8 year old daughter came home from school and said the other kids wanted to know why the flies were not going near her! She was all for letting me put the soap on in the morning after that." Frequently Asked Questions About Shoofly Soap & Spray

How much do I need?

One bar of Shoofly Soap is enough for one person to use and repel black flies for the entire season. The amount of spray you need totally depends on how you're using it and I can't predict how much you'll need.

Can Shoofly products be used with sun screen?

No. The fragrance of the sun screen can render it ineffective.

Must Shoofly Soap or Spray be reapplied after you've been in the water?

Yes. Shoofly products are not waterproof.

How long does it last before you have to reapply it?

It depends upon several factors. How much do you sweat? Your personal body chemistry can affect how long it lasts. Were you in the water? If the black flies start to bother you just reapply it.

Do I need to use both the soap and the spray?

No. But it's best if you do. Shoofly Soap puts a higher concentration of ingredients on your skin than the spray. Use the spray on your hat, the ends of your sleeves, and around your socks. Having said that, a lot of people use the spray only and are completely happy. But from my own experience, if I had to have one or the other, I would want the soap.

Are some people bothered by black flies more than others?

Absolutely. You can have four people standing on a golf course and have one constantly being bitten by black flies while the others are not. It's a matter of body chemistry. Fortunately Shoofly Soap and Spray work extremely well for the vast majority of people with that "oh so special" body chemistry.

What else can I do to help keep black flies from bothering me?

Avoid dark colored clothing like dark blue or black.

Does Shoofly Soap and Spray smell bad?

No. I've only had two or three complaints about the fragrance. Most people actually like it. But no... you're not going to smell like insecticide. All the ingredients in Shoofly Soap and Spray can be found in most kitchens.

Can Shoofly be used on dogs?

Yes! It works great for dogs... and horses too!
